Salem Methodist Church, located at the intersection of Salem Road and Sutton Avenue in Mt. Washington, was at the center of a community here named Salem in the early 1800s. Church services were first held in Reverend Francis McCormick’s log home. In 1810, a log church was built here on land donated by McCormick for religious and educational purposes. A brick church building followed in 1828. The existing structure was erected in 1863.

The Salem Methodist Cemetery was established in March 1817 by the trustees of the church. The two markers in this photograph are those of Reverend Francis McCormick and his wife Rebecca Easton McCormick. McCormick served in the Revolutionary War and was at the capture of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1790. He also served in the Ohio State Legislature. McCormick died in 1836 at the age of 72.
